THE FIRST PART OF CLOSER TO KENYA PROJECT

Last week we had finished the first part of the Closer to Kenya Project introducing the knowledge on Kenya and Millennium Development Goals. The project is authored by Kenyan-Polish Forum and co-financed by the Education for Democracy Foundation within the international help program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland In 2006.

The first part of the program took place in two high schools in Warsaw - Dabrowski XXXVII L.O. and Wyspianski XLVII L.O. Lessons were prepared and held by the graduates of the African Studies working as the project coordinators in Kenyan-Polish Forum and Simba Friends Foundation (Katarzyna Slowik, Natalia Cwik and Kamila Kadzidlowska).
CLOSER TO KENYA lessons are concerning the following topics:

  • Cultural diversity in Kenya
  • History of Kenya
  • Kenyan Development Challenges
  • Millennium Development Goals
  • The global influence of consumer's and civil behavior
  • The tutors are very content with the teenager’s involvement in the discussions and they wished to have had more time to carry on the lessons. You can take a look on the photo gallery from the Wyspianski Secondary School and Dabrowski Secondary School

The second part of CLOSER TO KENYA is a competition on a project of the creative campaign about Africa that could be realized in the Polish high schools in the year 2007. The competition is addressed to the teenagers present during the lessons.
The prize for the winner will be a visit to:

  • the village of Sega In Kenya, where the Simba Friends Foundation is executing a school development project (Kogere Primary School; www.simbafriends.org)
  • in UNEP in Nairobi (www.unep.org)
  • in the Kenyan Millennium village (www.unmillenniumproject.org)
  • The aim of the trip to Kenya is to give the winner direct experience with peers in Kenya, as well as knowledge of the work of experts dealing with modern challenges for the development of Kenya.

The third part of the Project, website called Hart of Africa, is still being elaborated.
