CLOSER TO KENYA |

"Closer to Kenya" is an original project, authored by the Kenyan-Polish Forum and addressed to students and teachers In Polish secondary / high schools as well as to Internet users.
The aim of the project is to promote education with respect to non-European cultures, complexity of problems faced by countries south of the globe, interdependence between societies in the developed and developing countries, as well as the promotion of Millennium Development Goals. The project hopes to encourage young people to reflect on the issue of responsibility for international development and to inspire them towards creative action for the execution of the Millennium Development Goals.

"Closer to Kenya" consists of three parts:
1) DIDACTIC CLASSES
It is a series of 5 authorized lessons devoted to the following topics:
Cultural diversity in Kenya
History of Kenya
Kenyan Development Challenges
Millennium Development Goals
The global influence of consumer's and civil behavior
Classes are conducted In an interactively, with active student participation, use of multimedia (slide and film presentations) and with the use of professional UN materials for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals.
The classes are conducted by specialists in African studies, working for the Kenyan-Polish Forum and Simba Friends Foundation. They have previous experience in co-ordination of educational and scientific projects.
This part of the project is addressed to the students In the 2 grade of high schools (Polish Liceum) and the teachers in the selected schools.
The first edition of the program will take place within the Global Education Week 2006 in two high schools In Warsaw: – Dabrowski XXXVII Secondary School and Wyspianski XLVII Secondary School on November 20-24.
In 2007 the Kenyan Polish Forum will execute the project in all interested schools all over the country (interested Head teachers are requested to contact Kamila Kadzidlowska at Kamila.Kadzidlowska@kenya.com.pl or (22) 533-49-09).
2) COMPETITION FOR CREATIVE EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN ABOUT AFRICA
This part of the project is addressed to students in the 2 grade of high school (Polish lyceum) who have participated in the first edition of the “Closer to Kenya” project. The winner, who will be chosen on December 14, 2006 by the representatives of non-governmental institutions, will commit to conducting the selected campaign in 2007.
The prize for the winner will be a visit to:
he village of Sega In Kenya, where the Simba Friends Foundation is executing a school development project (Kogere Primary School; www.simbafriends.org)
in UNEP in Nairobi (www.unep.org)
in the Kenyan Millennium village (www.unmillenniumproject.org)
The aim of the trip to Kenya is to give the winner direct experience with peers in Kenya, as well as knowledge of the work of experts dealing with modern challenges for the development of Kenya.
The Internet site "Serce Afryki" (Heart of Africa) will provide information about African countries, Millennium Development Goals, Polish-African relations and developmental education. It will also contain Polish publications and university works on Africa as well as materials used for the execution of lessons in the "Closer to Kenya" project and reports on the visit of the competition winner. The site will open by the beginning of December 2006.
The project is co-financed by the Education for Democracy Foundation within the international help program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland in 2006.
